Humans have always had the innate ability to recognize and distinguish between faces. Now computers are able to do the same. This opens up tons of applications. Face detection and Recognition can be used to improve access and security like the latest Apple Iphone does see gif belowallow payments to be processed without physical cards — iphone does this too!
Face detection and recognition is a heavily researched topic and there are tons of resources online. We have tried multiple open source projects to find the ones that are simplest to implement while being accurate.
We have also created a pipeline for detection, recognition and emotion understanding on any input image with just 8 lines of code after the images have been loaded! Our code is open sourced on Github.
This blog is divided into 3 parts:. Facial detection is the first part of our pipeline.
We have used the python library Face Recognition that we found easy to install and very accurate in detecting faces. This library scans the input image and returns the bounding box coordinates of all detected faces as shown below:. Complete instructions for installing face recognition and using it are also on Github.
Facial Recognition verifies if two faces are same. The use of facial recognition is huge in security, bio-metrics, entertainment, personal safety, etc. Our testing showed it had good performance. Given two faces match, they can be matched with each other giving the result as True or False.
The steps involved in facial recognition are. The code snippet that does this is below. We create face encoding vectors for both faces and then use a built in function to compare the distance between the vectors.
Lets test the model on two images below:. As shown on the right we have 2 faces of Leonardo Di Caprio with different poses. In the first one the face is also not a frontal shot. When we run the recognition using the code shared above, face recognition is able to understand that the two faces are the same person!
Humans are used to taking in non verbal cues from facial emotions. Now computers are also getting better to reading emotions. So how do we detect emotions in an image? The emotions can be classified into 7 classes — happy, sad, fear, disgust, angry, neutral and surprise. We tried many different models and have open sourced our best implementation at this link. You can load the pretrained model and run it on an image using only 2 lines of code below:.Additionally, we can detect multiple faces in a image, and then apply same facial expression recognition procedure to these images.
As a matter of fact we can do that on a streaming data continuously. These additions can be handled without a huge effort. Opencv enables to detect human faces with a few lines of code. What would be if the source were cam instead of a steady image? We can get help from opencv again. No matter what the source is steady image or camit seems that we can detect faces. Once coordinates of detected faces calculated, we can extract them from the original image.
The following code should be put in the faces for iteration. We would use same pre-constructed model and its pre-trained weights. Applying the both face detection and facial expression recognition procedures on a image seems very successful. Code of the project is pushed to GitHub.
Also, you can find the pre-constructed model and pre-trained weights in same repository. You can apply both face recognition and facial attribute analysis including age, gender and emotion in Python with a few lines of code. The all pipeline steps such as face detection, face alignment and analysis are covered in the background. Deepface is an open source framework for Python. It is available on PyPI as well. And I wanted to do some fine tuning to it. Is there any advice or a bit of help you could give me as to where do I start?
First of all, this approach is not the best but it is the fastest. You might prefer to adopt this approach in real time applications. On the other hand, you can improve the accuracy. However, the structure of the network becomes so complex. There are convolution layers existing in that model. Remember that the model mentioned in this post has 5 convolution layers. This means more accurate model is almost 25 times complexer than the regular model. Alternatively, you can build your own model by applying transfer learning.
Herein, popular models can be adapted such as VGG or Inception. I did similar task for age and gender prediction. You should adapt this approach for emotion analysis task. Hi Sefik, i want to use your model for expression detection in my project at school but im having an issue with it.Having your computer know how you feel?
Or actually not madness, but OpenCV and Python. How cool would it be to have your computer recognize the emotion on your face?
You could make all sorts of things with this, from a dynamic music player that plays music fitting with what you feel, to an emotion-recognizing robot. For this tutorial I assume that you have:. Important : The code in this tutorial is licensed under the GNU 3. By reading on you agree to these terms.
If you disagree, please navigate away from this page. This also means you know how to interpret errors. Part of learning to program is learning to debug on your own as well. It will be updated in the near future to be cross-platform. Citation format van Gent, P.
A tech blog about fun things with Python and embedded electronics. Getting started To be able to recognize emotions on images we will use OpenCV. For those interested in more background; this page has a clear explanation of what a fisher face is.
I cannot distribute it so you will have to request it yourself, or of course create and use your own dataset. It seems the dataset has been taken offline. The other option is to make one of your own or find another one. When making a set: be sure to insert diverse examples and make it BIG. The more data, the more variance there is for the models to extract information from. Please do not request others to share the dataset in the comments, as this is prohibited in the terms they accepted before downloading the set.
Once you have your own dataset, extract it and look at the readme. It is organised into two folders, one containing images, the other txt files with emotions encoded that correspond to the kind of emotion shown.
Organising the dataset First we need to organise the dataset.GitHub is home to over 50 million developers working together to host and review code, manage projects, and build software together.

This project aims to classify the emotion on a person's face into one of seven categoriesusing deep convolutional neural networks. This repository is an implementation of this research paper. This dataset consists of grayscale, 48x48 sized face images with seven emotions - angry, disgusted, fearful, happy, neutral, sad and surprised.
The repository is currently compatible with tensorflow Download the FER dataset from here and unzip it inside the src folder. This will create the folder data. This implementation by default detects emotions on all faces in the webcam feed. With a simple 4-layer CNN, the test accuracy reached The original FER dataset in Kaggle is available as a single csv file. In case you are looking to experiment with new datasets, you may have to deal with data in the csv format. First, the haar cascade method is used to detect faces in each frame of the webcam feed.
The region of image containing the face is resized to 48x48 and is passed as input to the CNN. Skip to content. Building a program that detects faces is a very nice project to get started with computer vision. In a previous post, I showed how to recognize text in an image, it is a great way to practice python in computer vision. Today, we will do something more fun and interesting: face detection. As can be understood from the name, we will write a program that will detect faces in an image. Best way of learning is teaching, so while teaching a machine how to detect faces, we are learning too.
Before we get to the project, I want to share the difference between face detection and face recognizer. This two things might sounds very similar but actually they are not same. But in the other hand, face recognition, the program finds the faces and also it can tell which face belongs to who.
So it is more informational than just detecting them.
Face detection is like telling the object passing by is a car. And face recognizer is like to be able to tell the model of the car passing by. Here is a nice image showing the difference in practice.
We will use one module library for this project, and it is called OpenCV. OpenCV was built to provide a common infrastructure for computer vision applications and to accelerate the use of machine perception in the commercial products. OpenCV already contains many pre-trained classifiers for face, eyes, smile etc. We will use the face detection model. You can either download the XML file form Github if you have an account.
In this step, you will choose an image that you want to test your code on. Make sure there is at least one face in the image so that our program can find one.
Face Detection, Recognition and Emotion Detection in 8 lines of code!
Here is an image of a person I photographed from an art book. Make sure the image file is in the same folder you are working in. You will be amaze how short the face detection code is. Thanks to people contributing to OpenCV. Here is the code that detects faces in an image:. After the faces are detected, we will draw rectangles around them so that we know what the machine sees. The machine can make mistakes, but our goals should be to teach the best and most optimized way so that the prediction is more accurate.
This is final step, now we will export our result as an image file. This image will show the result of face detection. Congrats, you have created a program that detects faces in an image. Now, you have an idea on how to teach a machine to do something cool for you.GitHub is home to over 50 million developers working together to host and review code, manage projects, and build software together.

It plans to bridge a gap between software engineering and machine learning studies. The easiest way to install deepface is to download it from PyPI.
A modern face recognition pipeline consists of 4 common stages: detectalignrepresent and verify. DeepFace handles all these common stages in the background.
About the Author
Face Verification - Demo. Verification function under the DeepFace interface offers a single face recognition. Each call of the function builds a face recognition model and this is very costly. If you are going to verify several faces sequentially, then you should pass an array of faces to the function instead of calling the function in a for loop.
In this way, complex face recognition models will be built once and this will speed the function up dramatically. Besides, calling the function in a for loop might cause memory problems as well. Large scale face recognition - Demo. You can apply face recognition on a large scale data set as well. Face recognition requires to apply face verification multiple times.
Herein, deepface offers an out-of-the-box find function to handle this action. Representations of faces photos in your database folder will be stored in a pickle file when find function is called once.
Then, deepface just finds representation of the target image. In this way, finding an identity in a large scale data set will be performed in just seconds.
Deepface is a hybrid face recognition package. The default configuration verifies faces with VGG-Face model.
